A gallery calendar of changing exhibitions is maintained throughout the academic year in the Wallace L. Anderson Gallery within the art building. One of these exhibitions is the student show, and art majors and minors are encouraged to set aside their best work to submit to this annual showing. In an adjacent gallery is a continuing exhibition of works from the permanent art collection. These gallery facilities offer a range of work that enhances classroom instruction. In addition, visiting artists and related art programs are made possible each year by a generous gift from the Class of 1936.
For me, art is like alchemy. The transmuting of something common into something special. I begin a painting with no specific idea or image, only a vague impression of something I may have seen or experienced-in nature, perhaps, or in a book or even the color of a rug. Intention and chance intermingle. By introducing oils and dry micron pigments onto a wet varnish surface, I allow gravity and hydraulics to have a hand in generating the imagery, which continues to evolve until the media set. To a large extent, the materials organize themselves, carrying my vision beyond myself. Painting on aluminum lends "gravitas" to the work, anchoring the spacious realms depicted there. --- Terry Rose
Paper Explorations is a group exhibition that includes works on and of paper by contemporary artists. The theme exhibits the multitude of ways artists utilize paper in their work.
Passages is an exhibition of ceramic sculptures that explores the effects of time. Kelly is partly influenced by European still life vanitas paintings that utilize memento mori- a freshly extinguished candle, fallen flower petals, a stopped clock, or decomposing fruit and vegetables- to remind viewers of their own mortality. Completely assembled of clay elements, Kelly "carves" his sculptures to resemble wood and fruit in various states of decay.
Just as the banishment of illusion enhances awareness, so the demolition of aesthetic bling sweeten$ air of the world of discourse, of the Other. GJYD serves only consciousness, attentiveness, awareness. GJYD can never seek power--only release it. Don't picket--vandalize. Don't protest--deface. When ugliness, poor design & stupid waste are forced upon you, turn Luddite, throw your shoe in the works, retaliate. Smash the symbols of the Empire in the name of nothing.
My abstract paintings are based on details of my buildings and sculpture. The paintings are a portion of a much larger architectural drawing which has been surveyed to yield stimulating compositions. Color paper maquettes are made to study the proportions and color relationships. From these paper studies, candidates can be culled to be enlarged into paintings. A single building may result in several paintings depicting its diverse features. --- Malcolm Montague Davis
This show presents Russian photographs from the collection of Lawrence Doherty. Dating from the late 1980s and 1990s, this show includes avant-garde and experimental pieces as well as landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, and scenes of daily life.
My sculptures and drawings focus on the underlying connections between all life and matter. Informed by contemporary science readings and fueled by my intensive daydreaming, the resulting work is biomorphic but remains abstract. --- Brooke Mullins Doherty
This juried exhibition features artworks created by both graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in Bridgewater State Colleges Art Department. The exhibit showcases a variety of media created in both the Fine Art and Craft program. The exhibit will be on display at the Anderson Gallery and the Maxwell Library.
